OpenVXI: Confused about OpenVXI and active grammars

When I have a block and a field inside of form, I seem
to get wierld results

<form>
  <block>
    <prompt>block prompt</prompt>
  </block>
  <field>
    <grammar> word | another_word</grammar>
    <prompt>field prompt</prompt>
  </field>
</form>

In OpenVXI there never seems to be a way for me to
tell where the prompts are coming from.  I only want
the field grammar to be active for the field element,
but when queueing up the prompts I cannot tell where
the prompts came from.  I guess I would want to call a
VXIpromptWait(channel) between the <block> and the
<field>, but I cannot seem to find a good place to put
it.  Can someone give me a hint on where to start looking?
